VEHICLE REVIEW
2011 BMW K1300S
Where exactly does the 2011 BMW K1300S fit in the motorcycling firmament? There is no doubt whatsoever that it's a shining star as one of the most advanced, refined, and exquisitely engineered heavyweight super sports bikes in the history of humanity, but if you do have to place it in relation to other (and some may say lesser) stars, you would want to fit it somewhere between the Suzuki Hayabusa and the Kawasaki Concours 14. It's a superlative sports tourer that can absolutely rip up the track a la Hayabusa. If you're in the market for what many can consider the ultimate sports bike in the 2011 model year, you may now deplane as you have most certainly arrived in Bavaria.
The BMW K1300S' stunning 1,293 cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke in-line four-cylinder-engine features four valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts, dry sump lubrication, a bore and stroke of 80 mm x 64.3 mm, a compression ratio at a jaw-dropping 13.0:1 (racing fuel anyone?) and a conservative factory power rating of 175 hp at 9,250 rpm and torque 103 foot pounds at 8,250 rpm. This rabid amount of power is generated even though the electronic intake pipe injection and digital engine management including BMS-K knock sensor runs with a closed-loop 3-way catalytic converter to meet the extremely strict Euro 3 emission standard. The BMW K1300S is green as well as mean (sorry Kawasaki for appropriating your slogan). The front suspension on the BMW K1300S is a BMW Motorrad Duolever featuring a central spring strut while the rear is a cast aluminum single-sided swing arm with BMW Motorrad Paralever and central spring strut with lever system, which stars spring pre-load which is continuously variable and adjustable hydraulically at the handwheel, as well as adjustable rebound damping. Match all of this scrumptious engineering tour de force works harmoiously with a styling theme which does not give into the current fashion for throwing in a few hundred disjointed angular elements in a feeble attempt to be "cool." The BMW K1300S is certainly purposeful without being extreme or turning into a caricature of mechanicalness for its own sake. The magnificent paint scheme on the BMW K1300S helps minimize the bulk of the largish fairing and lets if flow seamlessly into the tank contours. The bottom part of the fairing where the radiator shroud resides is narrow enough so that you don't start thinking Rolls Royce Phaeton, and the rear end is light and trellised enough but not excessively so to the point where you start wondering about fragility. There are no aspects of the 2011 BMW K1300S which could ever be accused of fragility. This is one solid and thoroughly spectacular super sports bike.
Standard Features
Enjoying dynamics requires safety down to the last detail. And that is something that BMW Motorrad has been constantly reinventing for more than 20 years. The K 1300 S enjoys an excellent reputation when it comes to the fastest connection from A to B – and it fully deserves to:
The K 1300 S is a unique interpretation of the speedbike theme. It represents a union of fascinating and innovative high-performance engineering combined with excellent all-round and everyday suitability, not to mention excellent safety.
Not that this jet was ever slow, but in comparison with its predecessor, its engine performance and torque specifications have been increased even more, something which, this being a genuine BMW, it bears discreetly. After all, it is a superior pioneer in its class.
Maybe there is such a thing as perfect aerodynamics. And perfect design. The K 1300 S combines both of these with its own line, one which others will spend a long time searching for.
Like barely any other speedbike, the K 1300 S has managed to make the connection between the stable chassis characteristics of a supersport machine and ergonomic design for thousands of kilometres. Of course. It is a BMW.
The diverse optional extras make the K 1300 S even more individual. In particular, the new ESA II, which allows the rider to configure his chassis settings on the move, once again underlines BMW Motorrad's innovative lead – and not only in terms of safety.
