2009 Buell Firebolt XB12R

The original Buell sportfighter, the Buell Firebolt XB12R has evolved into one of the most versatile sportbikes on any road or track today. The Firebolt is known for the precise handling provided by a 52-inch wheelbase, 21-degree rake and 3.3-inch trail. Combining agility with the performance of an American-made Thunderstorm 45-degree, air-cooled 1203 cc V-Twin engine, the Firebolt delivers both character and performance. The blacked-out Thunderstorm engine produces 103 peak horsepower at 6800 rpm, and 84 ft. lbs. of peak torque at 6000 rpm, with 85 percent of peak torque available over 2500 rpm. The Buell InterActive Exhaust system utilizes a valve in the dual-chamber muffler that is controlled by the ECM and adjusts exhaust flow according to riding conditions to smooth torque delivery and optimize engine power.

The 2009 Firebolt has enhanced braking performance from the Buell ZTL2 front brake, a four-pad, eight-piston system also used on the 1125R and originally developed for the Buell XBRR race motorcycle. Three-zone Pirelli Diablo Corsa III tires are also now standard equipment on the Firebolt. Up front, the Firebolt features a fully adjustable Showa inverted fork, while the rear is equipped with an adjustable Showa shock. The Veyance Hibrex drive belt with Flexten Plus technology, based on the belt developed for the Buell 1125R, is strong and durable while weighing about four pounds less than a chain drive. The Firebolt comes with clip-on-style handlebars for optimal control, an aerodynamic quarter-fairing with dual projector-beam headlamps, and a covered trim passenger pillion. New colors include Midnight Black with Cherry Bomb translucent wheels and Arctic White with Hero Blue translucent wheels, with color-match translucid windscreen. For 2009 the Firebolt has blacked-out frame, powertrain and other components.

2009 Buell Lightning XB12Scg
Having spent plenty of motorcycling time to become best chums with the Buell Lightning CityX XB9SX motorcycle, I was looking forward to meeting its more muscular larger brother, the XB12Scg. I split lanes on the congested freeways of Los Angeles during the week, and sometimes tour the unpredictable downtown streets at night or on weekends, so I appreciate the Lightning family's streetfighter style-aggressive, fast, and agile. I also enjoy the rush of a snappy ride through the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, and a few extra horses under the tank could add to the fun. While at 5' 6" I was comfortable, but not quite flat-footed, on the CityX, the Lightning XB12Scg has slightly lowered suspension, front and rear, and its seat height (28.6 inches) sits an inch-and-a-half closer to the ground (the "cg" appendage in the model designation refers to the lower center-of-gravity). This expands my comfort zone and, even though the XB12 is not particularly heavy (395 pounds, claimed dry), it makes handling the bike at slow speeds or at a stop that much easier. The ergonomics of the XB12 are well-suited to urban riding. The seating position is slightly aggressive, with the pegs set back behind the crankcase, controls on the wide, flat handlebars within easy reach, and the rider sits high enough to see all comers. The short wheelbase and steep rake make an extremely compact package, and the bike's narrow dimensions allow it to slip between vehicles with ease. Of course, even with its nimble size, sometimes one gets stuck in the stop-and-go pace of the four-wheel crowd. A thermostatically controlled fan kicks on at times like these to help the Thunderstorm keep its cool. Once parked, the variable speed fan continues its job, which may cause comment from non-riding co-workers who think you've left the bike on!
At almost any speed, the 1203 Thunderstorm V-twin engine produces plenty of power. The torque curve is broad and flat across the five gears, and combined with significant engine braking, there is not a lot of need to shift or tap the traditionally mounted 240 mm rear disc. If, however, you have been pushing the revs (redline is 7100) and find yourself in need of a quick slow down, Buell's rim-mounted 375mm single front rotor is at the ready. The inside-out ZTL2 disc with 8-piston caliper gets the job done handily while keeping the front end light.
Maneuverability of the machine comes from various technological features, including Buell's signature fuel-in-frame (3.8 gallons), oil-in-swingarm and under-engine exhaust mounting. Centralizing these weighty elements makes the bike light on its toes. When set loose in the twisties, the XB12 changes direction with ease, like the perfect dance partner anticipating your moves. And though the taut suspension may feel a bit uptight in a straight line, it has your back in turns. This bike does a very credible job taunting pure sport bikes in the twisties, thanks to both its secure handling and plentiful torque. The Lightning XB12Scg is an interesting character. Its gravel-voiced Harley-Davidson-built engine has a pleasing pulse at low speed, but smoothes out to a purr above 3500 rpm (at which point the mirrors actually become useful). Its tight, solid body is stripped-down, functional and a consistent head turner. From the translucent airbox and flyscreen, to the beautiful lines of the wide aluminum frame, to the underslung exhaust-which looks like a pocketknife tucked below the engine-the bike exudes cool.

2009 Buell 1125R

The motorcycle that redefines the superbike category the 2009 Buell 1125R is powered by the 1125 cc liquid-cooled 72-degree V-Twin Helicon engine generating 146 crank hp and 82 ft. lbs. of peak torque. With a foundation built on the core Buell Trilogy of Technology creating optimum performance, the 1125R remains true to Buell’s original sense of sportbike style and design.

New for 2009 on the 1125R and 1125CR models are targeted fuel injectors, relocated two sensors, and updated engine spark and fuel maps. The combination of these features offers improved drivability below 6000 rpm, even crisper throttle response, improved heat management, and significantly improved fuel economy. The updated engine spark and fuel maps will also be made available for 2008 1125R models. A new gear position readout is added to the digital display on the instrument panel as a scroll-to feature. A high-output alternator has increased capacity for accessory use. Slider bobbins have been added to the swingarm for protection and easy use of a rear stand. The front wheel rides on fully adjustable Showa 47 mm upside-down forks, while the Buell ZTL2 front brake has an eight-piston caliper. A smooth-shifting six-speed transmission works with a HVA (Hydraulic Vacuum Assist) slipper-action clutch that uses engine vacuum for easy clutch-lever action and reduced engine braking during downshifts. Quiet Zone aerodynamics optimize air flow around the rider for enhanced race performance and rider comfort. The fairing shape was developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, and features six-bulb headlamps, while LED turn signals are integrated into the mirror housings.

The 1125R is restyled for 2009 with new blacked-out chassis components, and is offered in Midnight Black and new Racing Red with Phantom Metallic (Black) wheels, and Arctic White with Hero Blue translucent wheels.

A sporty all-rounder and stripped down racer
Naked styling and clubman-style handlebar give a respectful nod to the nostalgic era of café racers. A 146-hp liquid-cooled V-Twin engine is geared for acceleration. Sinister styling. Sophisticated technology. The 1125CR, Erik Buell’s 21st century interpretation of the classic café racer, is a new motorcycle that defies convention and expands the streetfigher category in the direction of superbike performance. Positioned behind the black-anodized, tapered aluminum clubman-style handlebar and streamlined headlight and flyscreen, the rider has a wide-open view forward that intensifies the sensation of speed. With a dry weight of 375 pounds, the 1125CR is the lightest liter-class streetfighter on the market, and combined with 146 horsepower, it offers the best weight-to-horsepower ratio in the category.
The Buell 1125CR offers liquid-cooled technology and responsive handling from a proven platform based on the Buell Trilogy of Tech principles. The Buell Helicon 1125 powertrain provides the foundation for this riding experience. This 1125cc DOHC V-Twin engine features a compact, 72-degree design and is rated at 146 crankshaft horsepower and 82 ft. lbs. of peak torque. Buell DDFI3 closed-loop EFI produces throttle operation with a quick, smooth response. New for 2009 on the 1125R and 1125CR models are targeted fuel injectors, relocated two sensors, and updated engine spark and fuel maps. The combination of these features offers improved drivability below 6000rpm, even crisper throttle response, improved heat management, and significantly improved fuel economy. The updated engine spark and fuel maps will also be made available for 2008 1125R models. A ram-air system pressurizes the 12-liter air box for a gain in peak performance. Twin side mounted radiators within aerodynamic cowlings lower the center of gravity (cg) and centralize mass. The exhaust system features an under slung muffler mounted below the engine to optimize cg location and mass centralization. An HVA (Hydraulic Vacuum Assist) Slipper Action clutch features hydraulic actuation from the hand control with assistance from engine vacuum for lighter clutch effort and reduced engine braking. Low 76/27 (2.815:1) final-drive gearing produces outstanding acceleration.
The engine is rigid-mounted as a structural component of the Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) that has outstanding torsional stiffness, yet is compliant in the planes required to help absorb mid-corner bumps, and doubles as a 5.3-gallon fuel reservoir. Showa 47 mm inverted forks and a Showa rear shock absorber are both fully adjustable. Positive braking performance is provided by the Buell ZTL2 front brake system. The rear brake caliper is mounted directly to the inner surface of the swing arm and weighs 1.5 pounds less than a typical rear-brake design. All this performance is packaged in a motorcycle that is visually stunning. A narrow headlight pod incorporates a clipped flyscreen, while a removable cowl covers the passenger seat section. The blacked-out frame and chassis components contrast with red highlights on the front brake caliper, wheel rims, rear shock spring and damping adjusters atop the fork tubes. The Buell 1125CR will be offered with Racing Red or Midnight Black bodywork.
STANDARD FEATURES (The New Buell 1125 CR )

Based on the 1125R platform, the most notable change to the 1125CR is the absence of a large front windscreen. The not so noticeable changes include a revised swing arm to accommodate the change in final gearing from the “R” model. There is also a new map for the ECU, which was introduced to make some rideability issues prevalent on its sportier brother under 6000rpm a thing of the past.

The Buell’s unusual styling, aggressive look and riding position are key elements to the bike’s appeal. The bike has air scoops on either side and a low slung exhaust; the finish highlights the fact that Buell’s level of fit and finish has been significantly improved upon and is now right up there aesthetically with the top bikes in its class. It has thick clubman-style handlebars, and your torso is pitched forward, close to the front wheel. An equally aggressive set of high-mounted foot pegs push your knees into the carved recess of the matte-black frame and pseudo fuel tank.

Buell also offers an upright handlebar accessory option if the angle of the handlebars is uncomfortable.

The new 1125CR has 171kg claimed as dry weight, which feels low and centred.

The 1125CR utilises Buell’s fuel in the frame system, while the traditionally-located fuel tank actually houses a ram-air equipped 12-litre pressurised airbox.

Once the bike’s V-Twin engine comes to life there is still a fair amount of engine vibration, but unlike other air-cooled Buell motorcycles, you don’t feel like it’s going to rattle itself apart.

The Buell handles different types of riding scenarios competently, with a lot of power coming out of corners. The CR variant has lower gearing than the R version, and this makes a big difference to the bike’s real world ability. The Buell CR forgives gear-selection errors on the rider’s part by pulling very well in the 2000-4000rpm range, so you rarely feel stuck in the wrong gear. There’s useful power everywhere in the range. A pulley keeps the final belt drive under tension as well, so throttle response and rapid gear changes are translated into instant urge seamlessly.

The 1125CR has an eight-piston calliper on the front brake, which offered outstanding stopping power and a good level of fine control.

The Buell’s acceleration is powerful and responsive, and it has a lap timer inside its electronic dashboard and adjustable footpegs and control levers.

The Buell has a detachable tail section for emergency pillion transport and a 20-litre fuel capacity for a decent range.
