VEHICLE REVIEW

2011 KTM 1190 RC8 R

A winner on the start line. Fastest through the bends. The king of all the tracks. You and your 2011 KTM 1190 RC8 R. Always focused on the coming trip. The line? Burnt into your memory. Bend by bend. Straight by straight. Nothing to distract you. Here we go! Each and every day. Full throttle towards flow - you'll become one with your RC8 R. The Brembo's bite is super precise and the tyres elegantly hug the sweep of the line as your knee pads rub tracks into the asphalt. Back on the throttle, a hugely powerful torque, frequently no need to change gear – but always under control.

VEHICLE REVIEW
2009 KTM 990 Super Duke
Almost great with the Twin Cylinder engine, efficient agile handling, the new KTM 990 Super Duke
It isn't rocket science, especially if you're a talented and motivated bunch of Austrian engineers. It was the first true road sportbike, the KTM 990 Super Duke, had all who rode it gushing about gentle, giant V-twin drive, the chassis' unparalleled agility and a package that showed up much of the competition as lacking in focus and hardcore rider appeal. Some grumbled about the bike's poor range; those ballsy with he fuel light and limp with the throttle could see 160 kilometres between fill-ups but a yellow light a less than 130 kilometres was the norm. Other tutted when the bars began a subtle but insistent weave above 160 km/h. So you fix the flaws without messing with the bike's essential rightness. You fit a bigger fuel tank, up 3.5 litres to 18.5, and tweak the chassis geometry to kill the weave. While the bike's in R&D why not also extend the engine's rev limit by 500rpm, smooth and strengthen the engine's pull with a combination of revised fuel injection mapping and a smaller front sprocket, fit a prettier front cowl with new clocks and bolt on some exquisite radial, 4-piston/4-pad Brembo front brake callipers.
The result is a marked improvement on what was already a stunning bike. While individual elements have been brought on, the KTM 990 Super Duke's beautiful balance remains. This is the KTM 990 Super Duke riding experience in High Definition. The revised chassis an suspension retain that blend of playful manoeuvrability and peerless poise but iron-out the nervousness. The brakes are fantastic, with a subtle take-up that grows to brick-wall within a couple of millimetres of level travel. But the engine remains the star. Light and compact, it lets the rest of the bike shine until its time comes, with a return to a positive throttle mid-corner.From almost any revs, though 6000rpm plus is ideal, the KTM LC8 twin engine drags the bike toward the next braking area with a satisfying slug of drive. It's now smoother but still sounds and feels so good it's easy to hold the throttle to the stop for way too long. This truly is one of the great contemporary motorcycle engines. The engine's only real vice, its thirst, has at least been tamed by the bigger but no more bulky fuel tank.
Figure on around 160 kilometres to the yellow light. The new cowl, with that lipped 'screen', tries to suggest wind protection but it's lying, anything above 145 km/h still demands gritty determination and a low tuck over the tank. So, there are better distance bikes on the market, but then you knew that already and besides, big, easy distances weren't in the brief. At least poor range is no longer an obstacle to buying what is, to my mind, now the pre-eminent performance naked.

VEHICLE REVIEW

2009 KTM 990 Super Duke R
KTM’s Super Duke model range is first and foremost a good representation of what the Austrian brand understands through the word ‘Streetfighter’, but also the stripped down interpretation of the RC8 models. That’s how they end up delivering the 2009 KTM 990 Super Duke R and the simple model following the same recipe as in the case of the Superbike models and, implicit, expecting approximately the same results.
Great systematic power, unique features, agile handling hardly in the tracks
As much as KTM’s design crew would achieve in matters of visual similarity, although very nice and helps create a constant and distinctive scheme on all their sports models, the 990 Super Duke R and 990 Super Duke will always stand apart from the 1190 RC8 R and 1190 RC8 simply because of the totally different riding feel, performances etc. It all starts with the 999cc, four-stroke, 75-degree V-twin engine (best known as the LC8) making both the Super Duke R and the Standard model not only competitive, but even ready for the track. For instance, “R” model’s engine develops 130 hp at 10,000 rpm and 102 Nm at 8,000 rpm which is even more impressive when mentioning the bike’s 410.05 lbs weight. That’s also what the simple Super Duke will have to move around, but with 118 hp at 9,000 rpm and 100 Nm at 7,000 rpm so it’s a Super Duke to meet most riding demands. The 2009 KTM Super Duke R is not only more powerful, but more capable to be ridden aggressively especially around the corners as it features a 67.3 degree rake and 93.9 mm trail compared to the base model’s 66.1 degree rake and 103mm trail. The only disadvantage of the “R” model is that it features a slightly higher seat (15mm or 0.6”) than the Standard model’s 850 mm or33.46" one.KTM has found that offering diversity is the key to selling almost twice of the same bike and that’s what they achieve with the ’09 Super Dukes. More revs and a sportier chassis not only increase performance, but popularity among riders as well. And we all know how much that counts when the competition is strong. In this case, it is represented by the Ducatis Hypermotard 1100 and 1100 S, two bikes built in the same style (even though the name indicates something else) and powered by a less powerful (90 hp at 7,750 rpm) engine, but which delivers maximum torque (76 lb-ft) at only 4,750 rpm so it is a hyper motard after all. The source of all fun and excitement is a 1,078cc, L-twin cylinder, two valves per cylinder Desmodromic, air-cooled motor and, like in the case of the Dukes, this thing features a six-speed tranny.Weighing just a little less (390 lbs - 1100 S and 395 lbs - 1100), the 2009 Ducati Hypermotards are simply built for corner carving and suiting a variety of riding needs so that’s what positions these bikes next to the Super Dukes from KTM.
KTM always managed to stand out with their uniquely modeled bikes, especially those that are destined for street and track use and the Super Duke, but especially the Super Duke R have their maker’s emblem stamped all over them. Angular lines dominate the stripped down bodywork while the streetfighter headlight looks like having been cut out from a fully faired model. Hmm…now which would that be? The Standard model is the only one to feature a passenger place to crash and, also, colors available for this model are Orange, White and Black. Both models ride on the same 17-inch wheels with 5-spokes and feature the same wheelbase. Also, the V-twin engine can be spotted behind a network of frame pipes and the small body panels aimed at enhancing the already very aggressive look of the Super Duke. The ’09 “R” model destined for the US market stands out thanks to an Orange Frame (also present on the European “R” model) and Black color scheme. Those bikes that won’t be leaving their homeland will not only feature the aggressive tail, but a Black and White color scheme, just like the 2009 KTM 1190 RC8 R does.
Hightech performance, simply the best, the new KTM 990 Super Duke R
From what we’ve come to find, if KTM wanted to deliver a unique ride than they’re truly successful as the 2009 Super Duke R is versatility itself around town and a blast on the track. The Austrian manufacturer’s greatest achievement for ’09 is the fact that they managed to improve the top end of the LC8 engine without sacrificing the low and midrange rush that made this thing so notorious in the first place. Instant power is always available a twist of the throttle away and that, combined with the bike’s light handling and versatility, will always get a skilled rider fast at work and fast around the track. The riding position, although aggressive, feels rather natural and not at all demanding on the rider’s arms or back. Wind protection though is not quite the thing to crave for if planning on buying this Duke, but riders doing so are more interested in stunt performing rather than high speed traveling so it’s a target well selected by KTM. Wheelies are the easiest thing to perform, with or without using the clutch, and the bike feels overall light and very flick able
A motorcycle with no passenger seat is clearly built for performance and well worth being taken on the track. This is where the Super Duke R unveils its racing velleities. While the engine is as good of a performer as initially noticed, the chassis is now 100 per cent valued and doesn’t manage to disappoint. This bike corners very sharp thanks to good weight distribution and the proper suspensions (48mm WP USD fork and WP mono shock) performs as well during the high speed straights. Stability is the word in this case, but also if it comes to braking performance. The Brembo units featuring two piston calipers for the two 320mm front discs and a single piston, floating caliper for the rear 240mm disc ensure safe stops each time they’re demanded while hard braking before tight corners will always get that rear wheel dancing if the rider swings well. The 990 Super Duke R is the kind of bike that blows everything out of its way on curvey back roads, but tends to fall just behind veritable superbike models at the first patch of road. It is perfect for different riding situations, but we found that the “catch me if you can kind of action” suits it like a glove.

VEHICLE REVIEW

2009 KTM 1190 RC8R
Austrian brand, KTM has worked to develop the now notorious RC8 model into a more powerful, slightly lighter and sharper cornering motorcycle, improving so both the times around the track and the appreciation among street riders. So while carrying on producing the Standard RC8 as a 2009 model year, KTM also puts on sale the RC8 R model, a nightmare for all competitors out there, be them Japanese or European.
Power unit engine(mega thrust), supreme aerodynamics, sharper & lighter than anything
When KTM is set towards success, there’s nothing to stop them from achieving their ambition so although the RC8 was brand new last year, now we’re dealing with an upgraded version of it called “R”. But this is not just a base model with racing pipes, a power commander and a stiffened up chassis. In fact, KTM has increased the twin cam 75-degree V-twin’s displacement to 1,195cc (1,148cc on the standard RC8) and brought in more power (165 horsepower, to be more precise) and torque (3 Nm more) while managing to slightly reduce overall wet weight with 0.37 lbs (2 kilos). Also, handling is now suppose to be more aggressive in order to match the engine’s capabilities and it is all achieved with a 3.82" trail, 0,20" shorter wheelbase (or 5mm) and 4.7" of rear suspension travel instead of 4.9", for more stability around the corners.Another great feature that the “R” model gets from its standard sibling is the 20mm altering seat height (from 805mm to 825mm or 31.69/32.48") as, most likely, KTM is aware that the bike is rather tall so they plan to make it adequate for most riders out there. What’s sure not to miss is the sweet riding behavior achieved with an unbeatable chassis and impressive power to weight ratio – 2.38 lbs for every horsepower. From the performance point of view, the 2009 KTM RC8 R is a totally new bike, but so are the 2009 BMW S1000RR and Aprilia RSV4 European alternatives. The Ducati 1198 is a consecrated name already, just as the Japanese square is. Apart from the BMW superbike, these bikes are powered by twin-cylinder engines while the four-cylinder engine is synonymous to the Honda CBR1000RR ABS, Yamaha R1, Suzuki GSX-R1000 as well as the Kawasaki ZX-10R. In comparison to these last four, both the simple and “R” KTM model are new entries still, so it’s the recommended thing to start distinguishing through something in the collective mental.
Unique flash performer, more superior & dynamic, demolish the racing tracks
Style is a good thing to start with and, despite the fierce competition, KTM has managed to set the RC8 apart by simply implementing their unique razor-sharp lines and not just trying to make their bike resemble something that other manufacturers did. That’s how the single headlight that is longitudinally mounted on the front fairing and perfectly integrated with the windscreen originally ended up on the bike and now is carried on the “R” model. The angular lines from across the side fairing and 4.36 gallons gas tank make no exception as well while the exhaust, which is mounted underneath the engine, will most likely make its presence heard rather than seen so it’s all about delivering and absolutely clean looking motorcycle with a fair share of aggressive touches to match the racing performances. While the rider seat is positioned at a manageable level, the passenger one looks like saying that the sky is the limit. We don’t know if that’s quite safe, but it looks like nothing we’ve seen before. The five-spoke wheels measuring 17 inches in diameter do look like the appropriate thing for the RC8 to ride on and, as mentioned before, these are brought just a little bit closer together on the brand new RC8 R. Also, this last distinguishes mainly thanks to the Black/White color scheme and Orange frame, which are nothing more or less than the individual colors available for the standard model in 2008 and this year as well.
The 2009 RC8 R is an even greater blast compared to the standard model and it all starts with the bigger and retuned engine. This also required another set of pistons and the fuel injection system now brings a much bigger contribution to the engine delivering a much healthier low end rush. This is one great characteristic that V-twin engines have and the Austrians exploited it to the maximum on this brand new model. Maximum horsepower (170) is now achieved at 10,250rpm and despite the engine type, vibrations don’t become bothering at no time while the sound is the sweetest thing ever if we tend to forget about four-cylinder engines for a little while. And that’s what the new RC8 manages to do with its unique power and torque curves. As known, the RC8 works with a six-speed gearbox and this has also been improved on the last model so that it would work smoother and not overwhelming for the average street user. The clutch pulls in easily so shift sixth and head to the straight track section where it’s very easy to notice how good the aerodynamics actually are as the bike is practically built around the rider. Even more, ergonomics are adjustable so that all riders can find their adequate riding position on the RC8, but as good as that sounds, the bike will never manage to feel like being destined for the street. So it’s almost pointless to buy this thing if planning to ride it only on the streets as you’ll be much better off with a Yamaha R6S in that situation. The chassis further enhances our positive opinion about the “R” model. Built for the track, the suspensions (a compression and rebound damping adjustable WP 43mm USD fork and a fully adjustable rear shock) ensure great stability at racing speeds and an unbeatable reassuring feel around tight corners. Virtually all that this bike requires is for the rider to lean a little bit more and it will wear your knee pads entirely in no time. It’s a great overall feel that KTM delivered a marvelous superbike, but not complete. Not until you hear about the Brembo brakes featuring two 320mm disc up front and a rear 220mm rear one. Right after worming up properly, these provide great stopping power and that irreplaceable feel that braking later before a corner won’t result into a high side. Finally, the 2009 RC8 R is that exact bike that nobody thought KTM capable of delivering and which changes our opinion each time we look back at the time we had on it.
